ABOUT
At the southern foothills of Mount Macedon, known to the local Indigenous people as Tarehewait or Geboor, is the township of Macedon, formerly known as Middle Gully. The settlement of Middle Gully began as an overnight stop for diggers on their way to the goldfields at Castlemaine and Bendigo during the 1850s but the town received a real boost when construction of the railway commenced in 1858. As the construction workers arrived, new hotels, schools and stores were quickly established and in 1874 the station and township were renamed as Macedon.
The Macedon Railway Hotel, the only hotel to still remain in the town, was first licensed in 1865 and is 1 of 24 railway hotels that are in operation in Victoria today. The Hotel conveniently sits directly opposite the train station and is only 1 hours commute from Melbourne or Bendigo.

If these walls could talk!
Over its 154 year history, the pub has seen a stabbing, a shooting, been shelter for 300 people and 200 animals in the Ash Wednesday fires and received a visit from Prince Charles & Princess Diana. Not to mention boasting the 43-year residence of one of Australia's longest-serving female Publicans, Annie MacPherson.

Today the "Railway", as it is affectionately known, takes pride in being an all-inclusive venue and safe place for all to come and experience the fusion of fare, libation and diapason. We invite you to unwind in the front bar, feast in the Bistro and take in the sweeping views of Mount Macedon from our outdoor decking area. In the colder months, the open fire is roaring and will warm you as you sit by the fireside and try not to fall into slumber.
So relax. You're in the country!
We encourage you to disconnect from the outside world and talk to the person next to you.
